Studies Quarterly Review and the Iona Institute are pleased to announce our second Public Lecture. The speaker will be Simon Conway Morris, Professor of Evolutionary Palaeobiology, University of Cambridge.

Published quarterly by the Irish Jesuits, Studies examines Irish social, political, cultural and economic issues in the light of Christian values and explores the Irish dimension in literature, history, philosophy and religion. The online edition contains the full text of the lead article, along with abstracts from the remaining articles.

Overlooked in Irish History

John Redmond died in March 1918, a political failure and a broken man. In the years that followed his death the tolerant values of parliamentary politics that he stood for were, temporarily, pushed aside in a bloody tide of revolutionary violence. While an independent Irish state was established on sound democratic principles, after a vicious civil war, Redmond’s memory was systematically buried and his contribution to the independence movement ignored.

One hundred years ago, John Redmond was by far the most famous living Irishman. Today, he is almost forgotten: streets, buildings and institutions are not named after him. Redmond is regarded as representing a dead end in Irish history. One hundred years ago, Nano Nagle was overlooked, though the Presentation Sisters were working in nearly every large town in Ireland. Nine years ago, she was voted the Irish Woman of the Second Millennium.
