ICARE

A Poem by Fred Johnston
Vol.98, Issue 390

Un jeune homme est allonge sur les roches –

des petites vagues ont rongé ses ailes:

mais hier il a volé pour ceux

qui ne peuvent pas voler,

il a exprime leurs rêves

par l’arc qu’il a décrit en l’air hurlant.


Icarus

 (A young man lies sprawled on the rocks –

the little waves have eaten into his wings:

only yesterday he flew for those

who couldn't fly,

he expressed their dreams,

in the arc which he drew* in the screaming air. )

 

* it's also possible to say 'described', as we were all

taught to ‘describe an arc,’ etc. in school.
