Passing Sun

A Poem by Mary Guckian
Issue 374, vol.95, Summer 2005

Passing sun blinds my eyes

with shingle rattling under

my feet and hairy dogs

lapping at my heels, while

prams struggling in damp sand

are pushed by proud parents.

Young boys fly a lone kite

under delicate blue skies,

caressed by white steam

puffing from red and white

chimney-stacks at Poolbeg

electricity station.

On grey cemented level ground

arthritic people take exercise

after hip operations, using

crutches and zimmer frames

for support, while adjusting

to plastic parts now holding

aged bodies in shape, allowing

them to enjoy a further decade.
